Summertime Chic

It's here. Summer. You had visions of yourself wafting around in gorgeous flowing kaftans, nailing that cool casual look that everyone yearns for. In reality, you're just a sweaty mess who's one step away from launching yourself into the nearest fountain. It's not as easy breezy as we'd like to think, this summer dressing lark. We all aim to be effortlessly elegant but it only takes a dodgy Met Office prediction and you're all at sea.

Your summer wardrobe is your last chance to enjoy that carefree romantic feeling that only summer can bring - before long the shops will be full of autumn hues and woolly jumpers. It's time to try out the all-white look (Wimbledon is now but a distant memory), get to grips with the 'ugly sandal' (we all know this trend isn't hanging around) or go for a pleated midi skirt. Give pastel tones a go but be sure to try them out with a reasonable hemline - babydoll nighties are a no-no.

Invest in one go-to dress that suits all occasions and packs well - let's be honest everyone gets so giddy during the summer months no one will notice a touch of wardrobe recycling, will they? River Island have a gorgeous floral number that ticks the pattern box and the pastel one. Wedges are a must for avoiding the dreaded lawn sinking one gets with a stiletto and they are perfect for negotiating many a cobbled Spanish street after a long lunch on the rose.

If you don't fancy the girly nature of flowers, sugared almond tones or lace you can always go for the sporty look. Sport chic has never looked so good and it's a great excuse for wearing comfy trainers while saying you are being 'on trend'. Shorts are a great option too and much more practical than a skirt - just remember to make sure they don't cut you off at the widest part of your thigh as this is most unflattering. Knee length bermudas or even culottes (if you dare) are a safe choice.

Whatever you choose to wear, make the most of the glorious sunshine as the nights are already drawing in....
