It finally feels like spring has definitely arrived and that summer is just around the corner. The start of the summer term always feels wonderful to me even though it may be a few years (ahem) since I was at school. It's the sight of those unflattering summer uniform dresses and little boys in short sleeves that really makes me feel like it's time to break out the sandals. There's one problem though - I don't have any sandals......oh, in that case I'd better go shopping.
The perfect pair of sandals can be very elusive. It's hard to tell how comfy the shoes will be when you've only walked two metres and back in front of a tiny foot-height mirror made for elves. I have, however, done some of the legwork (ha!) for you and here is my edited list of my favourite sandals currently available:
Mint Velvet - The range of shoes on offer from Mint Velvet is getting better every season and they are becoming a footwear force to be reckoned with. There are many pairs I like from their existing range but I have narrowed it down to these two:
The sporty wedge Tess sandal (£79) is going to be my favourite I can tell already. The sports luxe trend is going nowhere and this sandal is a perfect summer partner to shorts and dresses. The slight wedge gives a bit of support and the best thing about the sports luxe trend is that it is centred around pieces that are generally easy to wear and easy to walk in. My second Mint Velvet choice are these black Sienna sandals (£89). Another big hit for this season is fringing so add it to everything. Black is a great choice for summer as it makes your outfit a touch smarter without being too formal and will go with anything.
Zara - The gladiator sandal was a hit last summer too but this season things have got serious.....it's all about knee high now and these leather Roman sandals (£89.99) from Zara tick all the right boxes. It may take some guts to wear them, I know, but once you've got used to them your sartorial score will go through the roof. Careful about the tan lines though....
M&S - Every season I manage to find a footwear gem in M&S but sometimes it can take some digging. From the amazing blue pointed heels to my favourite black ankle boots last winter, M&S always throws up something worth sifting through the comfy Footglove driving shoes for. This season it's these snake print white and grey low heel sandals (£25). They are smart enough to wear to a more formal occasion like a wedding but sporty enough to wear with shorts too. And they come with their trademark Insolia sole which means you can wear them all day.
Orla Keily at Clarks - Another big trend this season is the 70s and this means platform sandals. While I think I'll leave black 15 denier tights and platform sandals to the kids, I do love these Orla Keily Blanche sandals (£120). These shoes just put a smile on my face as soon as I look at them. For maximum impact keep the rest of your outfit quite simple in plain neutrals or for added punch mix it up with stripes.
H&M - While these shoes are technically a mule rather than a sandal, I love them so I've included them. They are made of the most beautiful soft suede - the fabric of the season - and the heel is just the right height for all day wear. These soft suede mules (£59.99) are part of H&M's upscale Studio line which is a limited collection of design-led pieces originally shown at Paris Fashion Week. The pieces sell like hotcakes so be quick. I'll be wearing my mules with cropped wide leg trousers for a little summer elegance.
Right I'm off to Mint Velvet right now to pick up my Tess sandals, after all, you can't start a new term without new shoes, can you?
