Not only are our fashion choices dictated to by the colour of the season, which undoubtedly is always the opposite end of the spectrum to the previous It shade, we now have to worry about a new kid on the block - the fabric of the season. For AW15 that fabric is suede. *Groan*. Suede, really? That highly impractical, boiling hot, expensive material our memories of which are drenched in a past decade that we would rather forget? I'm not jumping for joy. But I'm not one to make a snap judgement so I'll give it a go.
There has been a huge amount of buzz around a tan suede skirt from Marks and Spencer for a while now (the M&S PR department must be exhausted) but a nearly identical style is now available in khaki. Whichever one you choose wear with a simple tee and flat/block heel sandals now and switch for knee high leather boots and a chunky knit later (I've ordered the khaki one.)
The good thing about any fabric becoming part of a new season trend is that it is instantly available in a huge array of styles and colours. This berry coloured dress from ASOS is delightful. Layer it over a polo neck when the chill sets in. It will also double up as a coat.
Suede shirt dress - £85 ASOS
Zara has enabled us to experiment with not one trend but two here with this co-ordinated suede set. The top will look just as good with denim or layered over a white shirt and the culottes will pair nicely with knitwear.
Suede cutwork top - £39.99 Zara
The easiest way to try out any new trend is via an accessory and this convertible clutch is just the ticket. Tan goes with everything and this is just about big enough to be a day bag as well as adding interest to your evening outfits.
Lenox fringe suede clutch - £110 Whistles
The most obvious item to update in suede are your winter boots. Here's where the impracticality of suede reaches a whole new level but hey. Knee high boots continue to dominate whether flat or sporting a chunky heel. Just remember that Scotchguard - or check the weather forecast first.
Suede over the knee boots - £100 River Island
Suede jackets will be everywhere in about five minutes and I rather like this blush pink one from Topshop. It is faux-suede but that means you won't be quite so annoyed when someone spills a glass of red wine down you. It's a boxy fit so layer over something longer if you need to.
Suedette Harrington jacket - £65 Topshop
However you wear your new suede purchase keep the rest of your textures to a minimum and let the suede sing. Right, I'm off to negotiate a discount with my local dry cleaner and think cool thoughts.
