My Imaginary Holiday

It's arrived, people, the most anticipated season of the year; summer. Cue the smell of barbecues, long balmy evenings and denim cut-offs. Whilst the rest of the country seems to be jetting off to Mallorca I am staying put. I'm not gonna lie, I wouldn't say no to a last minute trip to warmer climes but I've become a bit of a holiday grouch in my old age and the thought of a bi-lingual squabble over a sun lounger and knocking someone's granny over to get the last croissant at the buffet table are just not my idea of fun anymore. However while one part of me is full of glee at missing the baggage handlers' strike en le continent, another is envious of all the Instagram posts of holidaying folk showing off their tanned hotdog legs. I absolutely love my hometown practically deserted come August but I do wonder when I'm going to wear all those clothes I bought specifically for my holidays that I wouldn't be seen dead in at home - not to mention the endless magazine articles I've digested on how to prevent my hair from turning into green straw in the sea, the best blue waterproof mascaras and how to make a sunburn remedy using old tea bags and watermelon juice. What a waste!

So to quench my holiday thirst I am just imagining what I might pack if I were to be jetting off to the Balearics. Here is my roundup of what should be making it into your suitcase. Tip: make sure everything goes together so you can get the most amount of wear out of the least number of pieces, skirts/shorts and tops are more versatile than dresses, a white vest, white capris and a lightweight cardi are essential and pack metallic shoes as they go with everything.

Monstera leaf t-shirt - Kindred £25

Always chambray shirt - J Crew £78

Cap sleeve stripe tee - Gap £16.95

Vintage cotton scoopneck t-shirt - J Crew £29

Lucie print cotton capri trousers - Mint Velvet £79

High neck Oaxaca print swimsuit - M&S £35

Linear prom skirt - Warehouse £25

Richmond shorts - Boden £45

Ola espadrille - LK Bennett £75

Just to put your mind at rest I have not missed out completely as we have just returned from a week holidaying in this country. We stayed on the South coast near Rye, East Sussex. While the beach outside our front door was beautiful and white and sandy it was absolutely thronging at the weekend so we ventured in the opposite direction and went into Rye. Oh my what a gorgeous little chocolate box of a town Rye is. Tiny little cobbled streets, gardens worthy of Chelsea, architecture straight from Mapp and Lucia (the buildings actually were straight from Mapp and Lucia as it was filmed here) and more feature windows than I had space on my camera for. We whiled away many an afternoon mooching, shopping, eating and drinking but I must admit I am already sharpening my elbows for the breakfast scrum at next summer's all-inclusive.
