I know, I know, it's been about four years since I last blogged. Summer has been and gone and we are now firmly ensconced in autumn. And what a glorious place to be. While I do love sandals, shorts and summer dress weather, I rather enjoy the slight chill to the air and the wonderful colours this time of the year brings - I'll obviously be complaining about the cold in about two weeks. Given it's not quite coat weather just yet I'm going to turn my attention to jackets. Your all-season saviour. Wear with everything from t-shirts to knitwear to dresses to skirts to jeans. Here's my rundown of my current favourites.

I bought this Vila beauty last week from a lovely little boutique in my home town of Berkhamsted called Muse. The owner, Barbara, always gets it just right and this fabulous green suede jacket is no exception. It also comes in a wonderful rich burgundy. I obviously had great trouble deciding between the two but I'm very pleased to say I exercised some self control and only bought one. Well done me. Today I'm wearing it with loafers, jeans and a slogan t-shirt but I'll be throwing it on with dresses, jumpers and skirts too. Oh and I'll be trying a hoodie underneath it as well.

My next offering is another belter and you really should have one of these in your wardrobe. I have last year's black version but I rather like this burgundy one. It is from Zara and is so cosy you won't want to take it off. The aviator jacket made an appearance last year in the wardrobes of the fashion conscious and it is staying put for this AW. Coloured (faux) fur and shearling are a big deal this season and this marries the two nicely. If you want something more classic by all means opt for the black. I must say, I can see myself wearing mine for years to come.

Talking of cosy jackets this one is like a great big hug that you really won't want to be parted from. Hush have some great pieces in their new season collection and this blue furry bomber jacket is one of them. Definitely one for your casual wardrobe this will ease you into winter nicely.

Carson bomber jacket - Hush £65

Whistles bring this jacket out every season in a variety of colours. It is a lovely cotton jersey pique and is just right to wear to the office as well as at the weekend. I love this red but it also comes in burgundy which may be more office appropriate depending on your job. It is a good price for Whistles and will be something you will reach for again and again.

Another label doing fabulous things at the moment is Mango. I am coveting a number of their pieces this season and this check blazer is one of them. Houndstooth and heritage check are absolutely everywhere in the shops right now and this one is up there with the best of them. Wear with the matching trousers if you want to be spot on trend or just update your current blazer option and add to any smart or casual outfit.

It's back to Zara now for another one of my season favourites. Zara is well known for its tweed, ladylike jackets which they repeat time after time. I particularly like this one as it is slightly longer than their usual Chanel style jackets which I personally find too boxy. I would however change the buttons on this as they are a bit too fussy for me.

And last but by no means least this gorgeous look from J Crew. Now I know the model is wearing shorts and I'm not necessarily recommending getting your bare legs out in October but this jacket can easily be worn with jeans instead. I do like a bit of camouflage but whenever I wear it I like to keep the rest of my outfit quite neutral and simple as the print is very busy. Having said that it goes fabulously with stripes as well as shades of pink and red. NB some might refer to this style as a 'shacket' - an amalgamation of shirt and jacket (see what they did there). I, however, cannot seem to bring myself to use this term without making my toes curl so I shall just be calling it a jacket.

So there you have it some jacket ideas. I'm off to turn the heating on so I can actually wear some of these options without freezing my little fingers off. Not that I'm complaining about the cold. Not just yet.
